Duration
June 2024 - August 2024
Core Skills
- CAD: tolerance analysis
- PCB design
My role
Machine Engineering Intern
Background
Accunome Sciences Inc. is a Series B Biotech startup backed by bioMérieux. Their flagship product, the DXcellence12, is a fully automated sample-to-answer molecular diagnostics machine that evaluates different bacteria and viruses in a collection of 12 samples at once. This reduces the time compared to traditional diagnosis by >80% from 8 to 1.5 hours.
What I did: Automation & Hardware Optimization
- Collaborated with a team of 10 mechanical and electrical engineers to optimize hardware integration under thermal and spatial constraints in the DXcellence12 Autonomous Robotic Diagnostics Platform with clinical-grade accuracy; presented results to CEO and executives.
- CADed improved mechanisms across two key automation modules to reduce dimensional tolerance variation, resolving contamination issues caused by improper sealing in the automated liquid handling system.
- Evaluated PCBs to improve coordination between the robotic arm and motion platform in the DXcellence12, reducing motion-induced pipette tip damage during fluid extraction by 20%.

In my free time, I created an intern manual which includes a detailed breakdown of the core technologies used in each of the machine’s components.
